Surat Metro: Transforming the Diamond City's Landscape


Surat, the "Diamond City" of India, is undergoing a significant transformation with the Surat Metro project. This ambitious initiative aims to revolutionize the city's transportation network, fostering sustainable urban growth and improved connectivity for its residents.

  • Two elevated corridors with a total length of 40.3 kilometers.
  • 37 stations, catering to different parts of the city.
  • Phase 1 focuses on a 21.58 km stretch between Sarthana and Dream City, featuring an underground section from Chowk Bazar to Labheshwar Chowk.
  • The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹12,020 crores.

Current Status (as of March 12, 2024):

  • Initial plans targeted completion of Phase 1 by December 2023. However, recent updates indicate a revised deadline of August 2024.
  • Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) "Narmada" achieved a significant milestone with its first breakthrough at Labheshwar Chowk Station, marking progress in underground construction.
  • Full completion of Phase 1 is now expected by December 2027.
